Nobbys Head, formerly known as Coal Island, is a headland on the southern entrance to Newcastle’s Port. The Island was attached to the mainland at first by the Macquarie Pier, finished in 1846, 38 years after starting. The pier was finally replaced by a breakwater and sand started to build up along the break wall leading to the creation of Nobby’s beach.

Nobbys head lighthouse is an operational lighthouse located on top of the Nobbys Headland, the lighthouse was established in 1854 and was the third lighthouse built in NSW. On the 22nd of June 2004, the lighthouse and nearby structures were put on the Commonwealth Heritage List. This cylindrical tower made out of sandstone has a height of 10 meters and a range of 44km. This lighthouse is a beautiful structure on top of Nobbys head and we highly recommend the free walk up to see this wonderful historic lighthouse.

From Nobbys Beach car park there is a 550m walk to the gate of the lighthouse and from the gate, there is a 220m uphill walk up to the lighthouse. Nobby’s Head is a geographical icon that is hard to overlook. This is a masterpiece located near the entrance of Newcastle Harbour, the historic lighthouse and signal station on its peak is a national icon and a favourite subject for photographers who wish to take an image that distinctively symbolizes Newcastle and its history.
