Fort Scratchley located in Newcastle East, previously a coastal defense system, now a thriving museum that tells a lot about Newcastle’s past. The fort was constructed around a battery of three guns facing towards the ocean, with other guns towards the harbour.

As well as the history around it the views of the city and surrounding areas make this attraction a must-visit location. A quick drive from the city or a short walk from Nobbys Beach will get you to the amazing views and history at Fort Scratchley.


Fort Scratchlet artillery

Inside the Fort, you can find several historic buildings and installations, including Commandants Cottage, The Laboratory, Battery Observation Post, and Artillery Store. The fort is open six days a week from 10 am to 4 pm. It is closed on Tuesdays and major public holidays. General admission to Fort Scratchley is free.
